Visiting Thailand is a great decision .... Likewise, I decided to do that 30 odd years ago - and have stayed here even since! It's a land of interesting cultures, sites to visit, lovely food and an amazing variety of juicy fruits to eat year round ... fantastic beaches to relax on, and not to forget the climate and genuine friendliness and kindness of her people (especially if you get away from the big Mango). Obviously depending on how long your stay is ... here are some suggestions on sites or experiences you "MUST" see or do:

*Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Grand Palace and Mural paintings of the famous Ramakian Epic
*Royal Barges
*Chatuchak weekend market (beware of pick-pockets)
*Ancient City
*Thai food ... try any of the Central Department Stores food courts ... they're cheap, clean and tasty - huge selection to try out.
More time ...
There are other interesting temples - like Wat Po (massage) and Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn); The floating market; Jim Thompson's house, Snake farm; A Thai massage; Drinks at Patpong (Must read the tips given on the website detailed below).
More time ...
For shopping ... Pra Tu Nam (especially clothing); Pantip Plaza (computers, software, copies!); Siam Square; River trip to Ayutthaya; And of course the many seaside resorts to choose from ... Pattaya, Hua Hin, Phuket ... Krabi, Koh Samui ... you could end up staying permanently here, like me! And don't forget other lovely destinations - like Sukhothai and Chiang Mai (cooler too).

I also strongly suggest you get the book "Tales from The Ramakian" - you can easily buy it at the website www.theramakian.com - only US$12.- (including shipping) or 300 baht if you're already in Thailand as not only does the book tell you this fabulous ancient story, but it also gives you a short history of Siam (before it became Thailand) and of the interesting origin of the Emerald Buddha Statue. In the website, there are also lots of safety tips, info on food, about taxis, scams to avoid, bi-lingual charts to download to help you when ordering noodles, fruit etc. The book will make your trip even more enjoyable... and better informed.
